Essential oils are highly concentrated essences of various plants and flowers. The oils are found in different parts of the plant such as the flower, bark, twig or leaf. Hippocrates recommended the use of aromatic oils for healing. Aromatherapy is the art of using these oils to promote healing. Using essential oils for stress reduction is simple. They can be used in the bath, with a carrier oil for massage or in an oil burner.
Put a few drops in a warm bath. Use with a carrier oil such as almond during a massage. Vaporize in an oil burner to fill a room with a soothing scent.
Essential oils have an immediate impact on our sense of smell. When they are inhaled, the olfactory (scent) receptors are stimulated and the impulse is transmitted to the emotional center of the brain-the limbic system.
The limbic system connects to the area of the brain involving memory, breathing and blood circulation. It is also connected to the endocrine glands which regulate hormone levels in the body. The oil's fragrance and its effects determines how these systems are stimulated. When used on the skin with massage, essential oils are not only inhaled but absorbed through the skin. They penetrate the muscles and find their way to the bloodstream. They are then transported to the organs and systems of the body. There are a number of easily obtainable essential oils for stress relief. They can be found in health food stores, online, in natural pharmacies or through a practitioner. Here is a small sample.
Basil Helpful with mental fatigue, negativity and burnout. Improves concentration, clarity and enthusiasm. Cedarwood Aids focus, concentration, purpose and stability. Wards off mental strain, worry and anxiety.
Cinnamon Invigorates and helps with positivity. Helps fight stress and fatigue. Eucalyptus Used to combat confusion, lethargy and restlessness. Aids in confidence, vitality, creativity and rejuvenation.
Grapefruit Used as a mental stimulator. Combats mental exhaustion and frustration. Improves clarity, positivity and inspiration.
Lemmongrass Reduces stress and panic. Improves concentration and focus. Orange Provides mental stimulation. Helps fight apathy, anxiety and burnout. Pine Combats stress and low self esteem. Provides confidence and balance. Rosemary Aids in energy, creativity, clarity and concentration. Useful in cases of strain, overwork, fatigue and lethargy. These oils should never be put directly on the skin. They should always be used with a carrier oil. And, never take them internally. Pregnant women should also use caution when using essential oils. When in doubt, consult with an aromatherapist.
