Experience the Healing Powers
of Relaxing Music

You most certainly have experienced the effects of relaxing music. Have you ever felt anxious while at your doctor's or dentist's office? Was there soft music playing in the background? If so, did it make you feel more calm about the whole experience?

The best dentist I ever met used music in his practice to make an anxious experience more tolerable. Over a course of four months, I had 23 amalgam fillings removed and replaced by this dentist. He played beautiful soothing music in his office.

Not only did he have the music playing, but he talked about it while he was removing the poison from my mouth. That made my experience much more tolerable. And, that was what he wanted.

Using music to calm and even to modify behavior is called music therapy. Music can be used therapeutically in these ways:
· Learn or play music
· Singing or humming
· Listening to relaxing music

All of these practices lead to the easing of stress. Stress relief through music is easy and very popular. How hard is to hum a tune or sing a song. I love to sing so this is my favorite.

Learning to play an instrument is a great way to unwind and express yourself. My husband is a musician and he thrives on playing guitar and singing. I can't imagine if he didn't have that as an outlet. He is a teacher and it definitely balances out the stress of being an educator.

Relaxing music is scientifically proven to slow the heart rate and pulse. That is the calming effect. It is widely used by medical professionals and practitioners to soothe patients during exams and procedures. Holistic practitioners, i.e., massage therapists, reiki practitioners, hypnotists and acupuncturists, use music to complement their healing arts.

The use of music for relaxation has been used in many cultures through history. Ancient Romans, Australian Aboriginals, Buddhists and Native Americans placed great importance on the use of music for calmness and peace.

Music connects with people on a deep level. If you listen to a beautiful piece of classical music, you would swear it came straight from heaven. Music, to some, is inspired by Source, God, Universe, Intelligence. Music is used to heal and soothe because it is the same vibration of our spirits.

Different types of music affects people in different ways. Country music may be calming to one person but cause anxiety in another. To test the relaxing effects of different music, take your pulse before and after listening to a piece of music. If your pulse is higher after, then it isn't as soothing as you think.

The best types of relaxing music are classical and especially new age. The best pieces of classical music are the ones with an even tempo. New age is the best because it has carefully timed beats. The goal of new age music is to promote relaxation and harmony.

If you are looking for music for relaxation and stress relief, any recording by Steve Halpern, Ph.D. is the best bet. He is a researcher and composer whose passion is teaching and giving people the healing powers of music.
